"Bittersweet Goodbye" is a song by Kylie Minogue from her seventh studio album Light Years (2000). The song was written by Kylie and her long-time musical director Steve Anderson, who also produced the song.

Background

The song was written and recorded during the sessions for Light Years, and was apparently written about Kylie's late ex-boyfriend Michael Hutchence. The song appears as the ninth song on the album.

Composition

The only ballad to appear on Light Years, "Bittersweet Goodbye" is set in B minor and features only a piano and string instruments to accompany Kylie. She uses a soft tone and her range reaches very high notes throughout the song.

Live performances

The only time Kylie has ever performed "Bittersweet Goodbye" was during the Anti Tour, which was a tour put together as part of the K25 celebrations in 2012, which celebrated Kylie's twenty-fifth year in the music industry. The tour's set list featured songs that had not ever, or rarely had been performed live in Kylie's career, as well as B-sides and demos.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Here we are in the dead of night
Will you keep me warm and hold me tight
All we have is until the dawn
Let the night be long and ease the dawn
I love you more than you'll ever know
It hurts to see you go

[Chorus]
So, darling, sing me a lullaby
Bittersweet goodbye

[Verse 2]
Don't think about the future now
These few hours
Let the nighttime envelop us
Take us under
Bewitching spell, bewitching spell
Here we are in the dead of night
Won't see you past the morning light

[Chorus]
So, darling, sing me a lullaby
Bittersweet goodbye

[Outro]
Remember me when you're away
