Disco: Guest List Edition is a reissue of Kylie Minogue's fifteenth studio album Disco (2020). It was released on 12 November 2021.
Background[]
Following the initial release of Disco in 2020, rumours of a potential repack were already circulating. In April 2021, Kylie herself confirmed that a reissue would be released later that year. In October 2021, images of a few of the variations of the then-unannounced Guest List Edition of Disco started to circulate online, revealing a 2-CD, 5-disc and a triple vinyl edition of the album. On 4 October, Kylie took to her socials, posting a photo of the October page of her 2021 calendar with the caption "After a weekend of looking at the past I'm taking a second to look to the future", alongside emojis of a moon, a crystal ball and a clock. Fans were quick to notice that 5 October was circled on the posted image; the next, day Kylie announced the reissue for 12 November 2021, revealing various formats for the release.
Alongside the original 16-track release of Disco, the repack included three new collaborations along with a series of remixes of the three singles from Disco, "Say Something", "Magic" and "Real Groove", as well as a new remix of "Dance Floor Darling", done by one of its co-writers Linslee Campbell. In addition to this, the 5-disc edition of the album included a DVD, Bluray and live album of the Infinite Disco live stream, as well as the 15 minute "Dancefloor Dreams" documentary. A CD single for the lead single "A Second to Midnight" was also made available, as well as a 12-inch vinyl of extended mixes of the songs on the original Disco album.
Content[]
Three new collaborations were released as part of Disco: Guest List Edition; "A Second to Midnight" was originally a demo for Years & Years; following the pair's collaboration on "Starstruck" in early 2021, the song was handed over to Kylie, who reworked it with its producers Biff Stannard and Duck Blackwell. "Kiss of Life" is a collaboration with English singer-songwriter Jessie Ware; the two first crossed paths during Jessie's podcast Table Manners with Jessie Ware; here, they first talked about collaborating, and it was confirmed a few weeks prior by Jessie that the two had written together. "Can't Stop Writing Songs About You" is a collaboration with Gloria Gaynor; Kylie has expressed admiration for Gloria multiple times in her career, even referencing the song "I Will Survive" in her own song "Where Does the DJ Go?". Following the release of Disco, Gloria praised Kylie, tweeting that she was keeping the disco genre alive. During her interview with Zoe Ball, Kylie confirmed that a video for the collaboration with Gloria had been shot, which was released in March 2022.
In addition to the three new tracks, a further seven remixes were featured on the album; the Basement Jaxx, F9 and extended Syn Cole remixes of "Say Something", the extended Purple Disco Machine remix of "Magic", the Studio 2054 remix and Initial Talk remix of "Real Groove" with Dua Lipa, as well as a new remix of "Dance Floor Darling", done by Linslee Campbell.
Singles[]
"A Second to Midnight", a collaboration with Olly Alexander, performing under the name Years & Years, was announced as the lead single on 5 October 2021; the following day, the song debuted 08:30 BST on BBC Radio 2, on The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show. At 11:00 BST, the music video, directed by Sophie Muller was premiered on Minogue's YouTube channel.
"Kiss of Life" with Jessie Ware was released as the album's second single on 29 October 2021; the music video for the song, a telenovela-inspired clip taking place in a restaurant, directed again by Sophie Muller, premiered on 4 November.
Promotion[]
Both Kylie and Olly appeared on BBC's The One Show on October 8 to perform a shortened version of the song, along with a choir. Kylie and Jessie both appeared on The Jonathan Ross Show on November 10 to perform "Kiss of Life".
On 25 November, fans received an email from Kylie's site offering the chance to win tickets to an exlusive event to be held on 1 December 2021.
Chart performance[]
Reappearing in various charts as an extension of the original chart run of Disco, the Guest List Edition re-peaked inside the top 10 of the UK albums chart, entering at number 10, while re-entering at number 7 in Australia. In the United States, the album returned to the top 10 of the Billboard Dance/Electronic Albums chart, entering at number 2. To date, the album has moved 35,000 units stateside.
