Greatest Hits: 87-97 is a greatest hits album by Kylie Minogue, released in November 2003 by PWL and BMG and distributed by Jive. The album includes songs from her first six studio albums, as well as a few remixes from her first 3 studio albums. The compilation received positive reception from music critics.
Background[]
The compilation’s cover artwork uses a picture from Kylie's photoshoot with Simon Fowler from 1990.
An 'official' cover, designed by Kylie and her team, was made available to download from her website and was also given away for free inside copies of Heat magazine as an insert, meant to be slid into the album’s CD jewel case to replace the preexisting one. Titled Vintage Kylie, the card insert bore the cheeky message, "Like Kylie? Why not have the real thing!"
In February 2003, an earlier version of the compilation, titled Best Of 1987-1992, was released in France in both CD and CD+DVD editions. However, they were quickly withdrawn from sale one day after their release date.
After the release of Body Language, BMG re-released the compilation in February 2004.
Critical response[]
Chris True from AllMusic gave the compilation four stars out of five, praising it as a "valid and well-represented (yet oddly out of chronological order) anthology of what Americans were missing." True is referring to the fifteen-year period between Minogue’s then-last successful single in the United States, The Loco-Motion, and her most recent hit in the US at the time of the review, Can't Get You Out of My Head. "For those who were surprised by her sudden reappearance, this will fill in the picture quite nicely, and for those who just couldn't get enough of Minogue upon hearing her for the first time in 2002, Greatest Hits 87-97 will surely satisfy," he stated.
Commercial performance[]
In the United Kingdom, the album debuted at number 20. It spent a total of 13 weeks overall on the chart.
