Background and composition
"Light Years" was written by Kylie, Richard Stannard and Julian Gallagher and was produced by the latter two. The song begins with a countdown, and goes on to talk about life in the future. "Light Years" was also in contention for release as the fourth single from Light Years but ultimately it was decided that "Please Stay" would be released instead.
"Light Years" first made a live appearance on Kylie's On a Night Like This Tour in 2001, launched to promote the album Light Years, where it opened the penultimate section. She then opened her "V 100" set with the song. The song then appeared on the KylieFever2002 in the "Cybertronica" section, where it followed a performance of "Limbo" and was mashed with the Donna Summer song, "I Feel Love". It then was part of the Homecoming tour in 2006/2007 where it was mixed with "Turn It into Love" and served as the final song of the main set. The song's most recent performance was on the For You, For Me Tour in n 2009 where it opened the show as Minogue was descended to the stage atop a large skull. The countdown of the song was used at the start of Kylie's performance at the F1 Grand Prix in 2016, which came before "Better the Devil You Know" and also incorporated elements of "Skirt"
