"Over the Rainbow" is the first digital single by Kylie Minogue; released by Parlophone on December 25 2005, it was Kylie's first release after she was diagnosed with breast cancer. The song is taken from the live DVD Showgirl which was recorded in early 2005 at London's Earls Court during her Showgirl tour. The B-side to the release is Kylie's version of the Christmas song "Santa Baby" which first appeared as the B-side to her single "Please Stay" in 2000.
In the official press release from Parlophone, the song was mistakenly titled "Somewhere Over the Rainbow", which led to confusion over the song's proper title.
Background and release
The song is a cover of the Judy Garland classic that appeared in The Wizard of Oz . Kylie performed the song on both the Showgirl and Homecoming tours to much applause. With The Times saying that Kylie "delivered a note perfect 'Over the Rainbow' with next to no musical accompaniment. The gig of the year? No doubt about it!".
The song is available to download on Kylie's website, iTunes and other digital outlets.
A promo CD was released in the UK and contained the live version of "Over The Rainbow" as well as "Santa Baby". This promo release was issued to radio stations only, although it has been sold on the internet. The promo CD's artwork featured a diamond shaped border around Kylie, which was the theme used for the releases of the Showgirl tour, who is seated on a sparkling moon, while the image given with the digital download is a close-up picture of Kylie without the diamond border.
"Over the Rainbow" was performed on both the Showgirl and Homecoming tours in 2005 and 2006 respectively. In both cases, the song opened the fifth section of the show entitled "Dreams", where Kylie was flown over the stage from behind the set on a silver sequinned moon.
