"Through the Years" is a song by Kylie Minogue, taken from her sixth studio album Impossible Princess (1997).
Background and composition[]
"Through the Years" was written by Kylie, alongside its producers Ingo Vauk and Dave Ball. Much like her work on her fifth studio album, Kylie was keen to experiment her sounds with different producers. "Through the Years" was written during the same sessions as "Jump" and "Limbo"; within 10 minutes of hearing Vauk and Ball's track, Kylie had written the lyrics to "Through the Years".
Musically, "Through the Years" contains muted horns, experimental vocal tracks and mournful lyrics; Cinquemani compared it to Björk's 1993 single "Venus as a Boy". The song contains a trumpet solo by English trumpeter Guy Barker in its middle 8, adding to the album's use of live instrumental tracks; Kylie found this unusual because she was familiar only with the use of synthesizers on her tracks, and considered the album a mixture between synthetics and real instruments.
Lyrically "Through the Years" mentions meeting an ex-boyfriend on "Through the Years", feeling insecure and doubtful about the entire situation.
Other usage[]
Since its release, "Through the Years" has been included in several of Kylie's compilations. It first appeared on Confide in Me, which was released in 2001, and packaged her DeConstruction material; it was considered a cash-in by Kylie at the time. The song was later included on Confide in Me: The Irresistible Kylie in 2007, which contained on every song from Kylie's DeConstruction years, as well well as rare songs from the era and B-sides. It was most recently included on the 2016 album Confide in Me; this was another package of Kylie's DeConstruction material, including remixes as well as B-sides and demos.
