Background and composition
"White Diamond" was recorded during the sessions for Kylie's tenth studio album X; it did not appear on the final track listing of the album but was included on the Australian and New Zealand editions of the album as a bonus track.
The song is a down-tempo ballad, featuring piano and string accompaniment; "White Diamond" runs for three minutes and three seconds and is set at a tempo of 128 beats per minute, in the key of C minor; the uptempo version of the song is written in the key of Ab major. "White Diamond" was written by Kylie, Jake Shears and Babydaddy, whilst production was handled by the latter two
"White Diamond" made premier on the Homecoming tour in 2006, where an uptempo dance version of the song was performed; it was suspected that the song would be released on X, but it never came to fruition; instead, the ballad version of the song was released as a bonus track on the Australasian editions of the album.
The song was first performed on the Homecoming tour, replacing "Giving You Up" as the third song of the show; the show was revamped after Kylie's cancer diagnosis to accommodate her condition, and "White Diamond" was one of the new songs added to the set list. The song was then performed as its ballad version on For You, For Me in 2009, Kylie's first tour in North America; it came after an interlude dubbed the "White Diamond Theme", which incorporated various quotes from actresses and films.
